Overview of Reading Program
Self-paced personal courses for students who want to improve their study habits or overall reading efficiency or both.
The Reading Program (our Reading and Study Skills Lab) provides another avenue for students who want to develop better study strategies or to increase their reading speed and comprehension. Our reading instructors will help design self-paced personal courses for students who have no specific problems but simply want to improve their study habits or overall reading efficiency or both.
Participants in the Reading Program set their own schedules. They come to the Learning Center's Reading Program Library (Room 0116, SASB) to work through assignments and practice drills in self-instructional work books. Students choose from a menu of topics including reading speed improvement, reading comprehension and recall improvement, critical reading, notetaking, test taking, memorization techniques, time management, stress management, motivation and concentration.
To begin the Program, make an appointment with one of the instructors (see Reading Instructors). You may be asked to come back at your own convenience to take Diagnostic Tests; these usually take an hour to an hour and a half to complete. The length of any individual course varies according to the student's personal goals and interests, but desired improvement often takes about 8 to 10 weeks to achieve.
